Silver Gelatin
This is considered traditional black and white photography.  This process commonly uses a commercially produced paper that is coated with a light sensitive gelatin emulsion.  Prints are most often made by enlarging a negative onto the paper, although photograms are popular.  The latent image is then developed and fixed using a series of chemical baths to produce the final photograph.  These prints may be toned, bleached, or hand colored with a variety of media.

Cyanotype
Invented in 1842, cyanotype is an iron-based process which requires contact printing.  The chemicals are measured and mixed by hand, then coated onto the support, which can be anything made from natural fibers.  The negative is placed in contact with the coated surface and exposed to strong UV light. The resulting print is rendered in varying shades of Prussian blue.

Van Dyke Brown
A type of simplified kallitype, Van Dyke brown is a combination of silver and iron. In a process similar to cyanotype, the chemical mixture is coated onto a natural fiber support, sandwiched with a negative and exposed to a UV light source. The resulting print will show tones ranging from soft brown to a rich, chocolate brown.

Gum Bichromate
Gum bichromate uses a chrome salt mixed with watercolor pigments and a natural gum.  After mixing, the emulsion is hand coated onto the support, and exposed similarly to cyanotype and Van Dyke brown.  Gum prints can have a single layer of pigment or be re-coated multiple times for a variety of effects.

Salt Printing
Invented by William Fox Henry Talbot in 1840, this process did not enter wide use until after he developed a way of fixing the print in 1844.  Salt printing involves coating paper with a salt solution, followed by a solution of silver nitrate.  The resulting light sensitive coating is exposed similarly to cyanotype and Van Dyke brown, then processed and toned.  Salt prints can vary in color and tonality depending on the type of salt and toning bath used. Salt prints are sometimes coated with a protective wax due to their delicate nature.

Tintype
Occasionally referred to as an alumitype, modern tintypes are made on anodized aluminum trophy plate as opposed to the more traditional Japanned steel.  Tintypes are one of the wet plate collodion processes in which a glass or metal plate is coated with mixture of cotton and solvents then soaked in a solution of silver nitrate.  The plate is exposed in the camera while still wet, then processed with an iron solution.  Unlike some of the other historic processes, there is no negative.
The final image is a singular object that can only be reproduced through rephotographing the plate or by digital means.

American Ivorytype
A variation of the salted paper print, this process crosses multiple genres - ivorytypes, crystal photographs, painted photographs, and photo-encaustic. Invented by Alexander Wenderoth, American ivorytypes involve a pair of identical salt prints, one face-mounted to glass with a type of wax encaustic, the other painted and sandwiched in register to the first print from behind.  The intent of the process is to mimic the hand-painted ivory miniature portraits that were popular in the mid to late 19th century.
